Empowering poor ethnic minority households

To Implement preferential credit policies under the National Target Program for socio-economic development in ethnic minority and mountainous areas in the period 2021 - 2030 (referred as National Target Program 1719), VBSP Krong Nang district has actively brought preferential credit to local people, creating opportunities to improve the lives of ethnic minority people and accelerating the process of sustainable poverty reduction in the locality.

Ms. H'Rin Mlo's family (in M'rum village, Ea Ho commune) was poor household and had coffee garden. In 2020, when receiving a loan of VND 40 million from the district VBSP, she planted 80 more durian trees and 20 green-skinned grapefruit trees intercropping in the coffee garden. In 2023, she continued to be loaned another VND 40 million. Up to now, the intercropping garden has developed well. Ms. H'Rin said: "My family is in disadvantaged situation, luckily, we can access to preferential loans for poor households to develop household’s economy, so we are very excited".

Ms. H'Hong Nie's family (also in M'rum village, Ea Ho commune) only had 8 acres of coffee. Her coffee trees were old, so the productivity decreased. Her family’s income depended only on the wages of her husband and her, so, they still have remained poor for many years. In 2022, through the Commune Women's Union, Ms. H'Hong's family was loaned VND 30 million by VBSP to buy two cows, worth VND 20 million, and the remaining money was invested in taking care of the coffee garden. Up to now, the two cows have given birth to two calves, the garden is growing well, and her family's life is gradually stabilizing...

Previously, Ms. Ha Thi Phan (Thai ethnicity, in Ea Krai village, Dlieya commune, Krong Nang district) was one of the poor households in the village. In 2020, her family borrowed VND 30 million from the district VBSP to take care of a macadamia garden intercropped with more than 100 pepper pillars. Now, her family life is improving on a daily basis.

During the period 2019 - 2023, 5,283 ethnic minority households has taken preferential loans from VBSP Krong Nang district, with the total amount of more than VND 177.3 billion to develop production and stabilize the lives of local people.

Mr. Mai Van Tram - Director of the District VBSP said: Ethnic minorities in the district have accessed to preferential loan programs for the poor, near-poor, post-poor households, jobs creation, disadvantaged students... With preferential policy credit loans, ethnic minority households have used it for agricultural and livestock production, helping improve their lives and enrich themselves.

By the end of 2023, the entire Krong Nang district has had 5,169 poor households (accounting for 15.88% of the entire district's households). Of which, 3,077 poor ethnic minority households, accounting for 59.52% of the total households; 3,486 near-poor ethnic minority households, accounting for 10.71% of the total households. By 2029, Krong Nang has strived to reduce the rate of poor ethnic minority households by 3 - 3.5%/year.
